A few things have changed since this guide was written... you need a USA IP address to sign up with Google Voice. I used Hotspot Shield from anchorfree.com (free).

Gizmo5 is no longer accepting new users :( Sipgate.com currently require a US cell phone number from one of the major carriers to activate. I suppose buying an activated PAYG sim card from ebay might be one option.

IPKall take a few days to set up your account, but they will forward to a SIP URI anywhere and you don't have to fake anything to sign up. I've forwarded to a UK sip provider called draytel.org. I just had to give IPKall my numeric user ID and the draytel domain - easy.

I've also set up an account with ipcomms.net, a sip provider, who offer a free US number.

With both IPKall and IPcomms there are policies about the account being active or it gets shut down. My understanding is that each requires at least one incoming answered call per month.

Hi still having same problem. I am stuck at the very last step. I am getting a call from GV on my skype account on my PC as well as on my iphone but it is not accepting my 2 digit code, keep on asking me to enter my 2 digit code. Any idea what is wrong or I am missing something.

Pendu

Reading recent comments, I shall try the Ipkall route. Sipgate is just too confusing. Couldn't figure it at all and the software doesn't appear to work! Currently in China and by using Freegate have managed to circumvent the firewall and convince sites that the requests originate in the US. Without Freegate [which won't work outside PRC] nothing worked as regards GV.

Sadly it did not work. It got to stage 3 but Google Voice said the number must be a physical landline. Rather annoying, and I can't see any way round it.

I had to use IPKall to make this work. Follow the directions on Gizmo5 (ie: the server addresses) and forward your IPKall number to Gizmo5 which will then forward to Skype.

Once you have Google Voice set up, you can just add your Gizmo5 number directly to Google Voice, and bypass IPKall.

Thanks for the tutorial, can't wait for Google voice in Canada!
