Sign up for Google Voice outside the US
If you’re in Canada and want to try Google Voice, here’s a way around the US-only verification system. This should work for free, but requires a bit of patience. It should work in other countries as well. I’ve done this twice in Canada, and now have two Google Voice numbers. This should allow you to set up Google Voice outside the USA.
Step 1: Get a Google Voice invite & get a google account
First, you’ll need a Google Voice invite. This you’ll have to accomplish on your own.
If you can’t find one online, you can sign up at http://google.com/voice and they will eventually send you an invitation. If you don’t already have a google account (for gmail or google reader), then you should sign up for one of those as well, as you’ll need it to use your invite.

Step 2: Sign up for Skype
In order to receive a verification call from Google, you’ll need to download and install Skype. You can sign up for a free account right from the application if you don’t already have one.

Make a note of your Skype username. You might as well leave it running, as you’ll need to answer a call soon
Step 3: Sign up at Gizmo5.com
Gizmo5 will give you a phone number, which you can forward to your Skype account. (Note: you can skip this step if you pay for Skype’s Skypein feature)

Hit that little Register button there, and sign up. Gizmo5 will give you a phone number (usually starting with area code 747), and then you can go back to gizmo5.com and click the blue “my” link in the menu. Scroll down to the Forwarding Gizmo5 Calls section and select “Forward All Calls” and put in your Skype username.

Step 4: Sign up for Google Voice
Sign up using your invitation link, choose an area code and number for your new Google Voice number, and then enter your Gizmo5 number as your main home number

You should now get a call from Google on your Skype. Accept the call, and switch over to the number pad, and type in the two digit code. Do this slowly and quietly

Congratulations, you should now have a Google Voice account. Send me a text message if you get it working!

Update:
If Google Voice doesn’t accept your Gizmo5 phone number (with the 747 area code), you’ll need to do one extra step — sign up at a service such as ipkall.com or sipgate.com and then forward that number to your Gizmo5 phone number (which will in turn forward to your Skype).
I’ve tried ipkall, and it works just fine, but it takes a few days for your account to be activated. sipgate.com also apparently works, but you’ll need to use an anonymous proxy to pretend you’re in the US.

I am getting an error saying that account must have atleast one physical phone. Please help
Do you have instructions how to forward ipkall phone number to gizmo and then to skype. I have ipkall phone number with 360 area code and i have gizmo 1-747 number.
Also, I test out my gizmo number after forworded it to my skype account. I called my 1747 gizmo number but i didn't hear any ring on my skype on my pc. Am I doing something wrong.
Please help!
THIS NOT WORK
BAD TUTORIAL
I had to use IPKall to make this work. Follow the directions on Gizmo5 (ie: the server addresses) and forward your IPKall number to Gizmo5 which will then forward to Skype.
Once you have Google Voice set up, you can just add your Gizmo5 number directly to Google Voice, and bypass IPKall.
Thanks for the tutorial, can't wait for Google voice in Canada!
Hi Joe,
Thanks for your comment, I got call from GV on skype on my pc but it ask me to entre two digit code and when I press keys on the soft pad of skype it won't accept also i tried using my numeric key pad but no luck. I have tried 10-15 times but its not accepting the code and asking me again and again to enter my 2 digit code. Please help.
Sadly it did not work. It got to stage 3 but Google Voice said the number must be a physical landline. Rather annoying, and I can't see any way round it.
Reading recent comments, I shall try the Ipkall route. Sipgate is just too confusing. Couldn't figure it at all and the software doesn't appear to work! Currently in China and by using Freegate have managed to circumvent the firewall and convince sites that the requests originate in the US. Without Freegate [which won't work outside PRC] nothing worked as regards GV.
Hi still having same problem. I am stuck at the very last step. I am getting a call from GV on my skype account on my PC as well as on my iphone but it is not accepting my 2 digit code, keep on asking me to enter my 2 digit code. Any idea what is wrong or I am missing something.

Any idea how I can sign up to sipgate.com when I live outside the US?

A few things have changed since this guide was written… you need a USA IP address to sign up with Google Voice. I used Hotspot Shield from anchorfree.com (free).
Gizmo5 is no longer accepting new users
Sipgate.com currently require a US cell phone number from one of the major carriers to activate. I suppose buying an activated PAYG sim card from ebay might be one option.
IPKall take a few days to set up your account, but they will forward to a SIP URI anywhere and you don't have to fake anything to sign up. I've forwarded to a UK sip provider called draytel.org. I just had to give IPKall my numeric user ID and the draytel domain – easy.
I've also set up an account with ipcomms.net, a sip provider, who offer a free US number.
With both IPKall and IPcomms there are policies about the account being active or it gets shut down. My understanding is that each requires at least one incoming answered call per month.

Hey in case you did not know. you have to choose “landline or home” when verifying a GV number. even if the phone you are using is a mobile or a voip. Always choose landline or home. never mobile, or it will say ‘needs a physical……”
